Betting On The Mouse – Betting On The Mouse
Betting On The Mouse is the first international album by the Copenhagen and Berlin based band Betting On The Mouse.
More than anything the band is the brainchild of singer and songwriter Martha Marie Skou.
With a background in various fields of the Copenhagen creative scene Martha Marie Skou is the anchor woman of the band with members Xian Foo (drums) brother of Sharin Foo from the Raveonettes, Kristian Haarløv (guitar) and Jonathan Aardestrup (bass) all of which being most known for having played with Fallulah.
Betting On The Mouse joined together in 2009 and since played several concerts around Denmark. In 2011 their first EP BOTM was released and applauded wildly by public decision makers all over.
As a fine example the Danish music magazine Undertoner wrote: ‘It’s early in the year, but I can already predict that BOTM is competing to become this year’s record. A truly excellent debut.”
Since then much effort has been made soundwise and conceptually, and what was meant as an easy and structured process ended up as a long journey that brought Skou around the world. Several songs were written by distant shores on the two masted schooner Opal, where Skou was part of the crew for several months. Other songs have come to life in the late hours in Skou’s home in the rough working class area Nordvest in Copenhagen, with Albanian techno ryhtms banging through the walls from the neighbour’s gambling club. The loneliness of the sea and the scrappy rythm of Nordvest can be heard in the expression, that’s centered around restlesness, anxiety, desire and the moral hangovers of Monday Morning.
Most of the album is recorded in the old Funkhaus studio in Berlin in cooperation with Marco Birkner, sound engineer and GDR hip hop pioneer. The rest of the album was recorded DIY style in Betting On The Mouse’s rehearsel room in the alternative culture house the Candy Factory in Copenhagen. And now, finally, yours truly, QuestionsAndAnswers, are happy to present you with the first full length album, aptly named Betting on the Mouse, which will be globally released in March 2013.
Betting on the Mouse is intense and modern alternative pop with an organic instrumentation and much love to electronic details.
With an almost brutal honesty the songs invite you into a universe of dysphoria, but lifted and driven by desire and playfulness. Martha Marie Skou’s crystal clear seductive and charismatic voice brings her audience a sense of hope and celebration, while the lyrics center around much of everyday’s urge.
